The word limousine is derived from the word Limoges which is the province in France that started it all way back in the 1700s. The limousines in France at that time were however just done up horse drawn carriages, these carriages differed from the rest simply because they were showered in gold and drawn by the best horses in town and of course came with their very own chauffeur.
Engine powered limos
The first engine powered “limousine” came about in 1902 however it was not “stretched’ yet. the only thing that made it a limousine was the fact that the driver and passenger sat in different compartments. Therefore, the first stretch limousine that looked remotely like what we know today only came about in about 1928 and was created in the town of Fort Smith, Arkansas where limos were primarily used to transport band members from prestigious bands and their equipment around America.
